Giving back their self worth

Three out four of my children are in school and have faced bullying be it currently or in the past.  I try to make sure they know how important and valuable they are.  Of course the bullying is addressed at the school level, which usually gets nowhere, then it's addressed at the parent level and usually yields the same results.  But I feel strongly about letting my children know that words can be hurtful and it's okay to talk about it and they should always know that I'm here to listen, protect and defend them.   People are different and unique in great ways and that's what makes the world a beautiful place, but with the good there is bad.   We need to learn to look for the good in people and encourage the good, strive for the good.  And maybe, just maybe these children who are outright bullies, maybe they need some kind of intervention at home, maybe they are lacking the encouragement to be a better person, maybe their home life isn't so great, parents aren't attentive, too busy, in denial.  So maybe we need someone to stand in on behalf of these bullies, not to make excuses but to fix the root of the problem.   But most of all we need more voices for the victims of bullies, standing together with a message of that it's not okay to hurt others and it's not going to be tolerated.

LCpl Sawyer's Story

Hello! My name is Sean and I am a 23 year old Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and I was bullied from the time I was 8 until I left High school. When I first began to be bullied it was at the hands of one of my best friends when I lived in Arizona. He would hit me and call me names and this was because he was pressured to do so by other children. I moved to a different school and when I came back a month later he and the other children would call me traitor under their breath. After another year I moved to Chicago and  started school and I was the new kid, I was teased for being "fat" and a "nerd." The only thing that mattered to me was being good, I always wanted to be a super hero and believed in standing up to wrong doing people. To be there and stand up to them and be a hero for other people. That was what my father and mother raised me to be, a good person. So I just ignored it and reached out to those who picked on me to be my friends. This did not go the way I wished but I continued on any ways. So I made it to high school and there only presented more problems and more people. I was bigger and more introverted than ever. I stayed out of the main light and just tried to get through school. Girls avoided me, the jocks made fun of me and kids in the halls just ignored me. I was made fun of called "fat," "weird," "nerd," and so many other names I just became numb to it. I thought about hurting myself and worse. I resorted to art to let some of the pain out and just wanted to be left alone. One thing never changed though, I wanted to be the good guy. So after leaving high school, I lost the weight and joined the Marine Corps. I was finally able to make my dream come true, I stood for something good, and was a protector of the people. I accomplished something few ever do and my life has been great since that. My girlfriend loves me for the nerdy geeky guy that I am and I am an honors student. For all those out there being bullied take this from me "Lead by example and always strive to be the better person. Never forget the right things in life are never easy, but in the end they are the things that change the world and you will be proud of for the rest of your life." From LCpl Sawyer Semper Fi and keep on fighting the good fight!

As a child, a parent and as an educator

I was heavily bullied in primary school through junior high...then it tapered off as I entered high school. For those who weren't bullied, it's hard to describe how much of a nightmare it makes every day living for a child. For me, I was bullied because I was weaker than most boys, not very sports inclined and I had a severe stutter. I was the perfect candidate for bullying. Nothing was ever done by administration, teachers, anybody. Typical responses were to just "grow up" or "toughen up" or "get over it". What those responses lack are empathy...which is what makes bullying possible to begin with. As a society, we have a severe lack of empathy...and until children and parents and school officials are educated to exactly how it feels, how devastating it is, how much it can ruin a child's life, nothing will ever be done about it. Today I am a parent and an educator and I follow a zero-tolerance policy regarding bullying. If we even see a *hint* of it, the response is immediate and severe. I'm so thankful for organizations like this one and the film is simply life changing.
