Bullying Gave me PTSD

Hello everyone,

My name is Paula, and I was consistently bullied for 7 years, from 6th to 12th grade.

From my classmates (and even from some of my teachers), I faced verbal abuse, physical abuse, racial bullying, learning disability bullying, cyberbullying, and even sexual harassment.

I never understood why people targeted me. I was friendly and never got in trouble with anybody. I didn't even ask to be popular. I didn't need to be loved and accepted, but I did need respect. Instead, I felt dehumanized, like a toy for other people's amusement.

Those seven years have been traumatizing...enough for psychologists and psychiatrists to diagnose me with severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Now I'm taking a year off of college to work on myself and feel better, which I believe will be a good investment for my future.

My story isn't actually that rare. I've met a lot of other people who have lived through bullying, but have come out traumatized and needing help.

I hope no other bullied survivor has to go through this. It's frustrating and has kind of thrown me off the plans I had for myself.

That is why I want to give this suggestion to avoid it: the minute you feel depressed from all the bullying, SEEK HELP. Please go to a professional before it develops into something worse. Additionally, please talk to someone in your school's administration for help. Personally, I wish I had gone directly to admin sooner.

Finally, I am trying to raise money for a PTSD service dog that I need. I would love it if you could read my full story, donate, and share! Thank you! http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/bullied-survivor-needs-service-dog/173623

The Book

Hi, my name is Leah. Most people think I'm just a shy little girl who hates school. But I'm not. It all started in 4th grade in a pokemon book. My "friends" were sitting in front of me on the bus after the book fair that day and they were writing stuff like "who I like, who I hate who is my best friend" etc. Then it came to "who I want to murder." I didn't know who they were going to write until I saw my name, written down, in that book, under that column. I started to tear up, I couldn't belive they would write such a thing. I thought we were friends, they always came to my house after school to play. Or maybe it was because I was the only one in the whole park who even had a playground. They had also said that we couldn't be friends in school because it would "hurt there ego." When we got off the bus I told my mom and she told one of there dads, but he didn't care.

My mom wrote a letter to the principal saying that we couldn't be near each other in school. The principal called my teacher, Joe (who the book belonged to)and me down to his office. Joe dinied that he even had the book. The principal said that it was a big deal and that if we were in high school it would have been taken to the police. He also said that he would call in the other people on the bus who where Joe's friends. I told him that they would lie, but he ashured me that they wouldn't. Then he told me and my teacher that we could leave. The next day the principal called me down again and told me that Joe finally admitted that he wrote it and that he was transferred to an other school.

A few months later I took a shower in the morning before school rather than the night before. At school when I was washing my hands in the bathroom two girls named Petrina and Megan walked in. My hair was still wet from the shower. Petrina asked my if I dipped my head in a puddle. Megan asked me if I washed my hair in the sink. I told them that I didn't and walked away.

The next year I moved and had to switch schools. I thought things would get better and that I could start fresh. But apperentally I moved to the same school that Joe tranfered to. Things from there just got worse. In the first few weeks it was fine. then there was a fight on the bus and people were saying stuff like " why did you move here" and "go home." They talked about me behind my back on the lunch line when I was right next to them. Then someone wrote a letter to my teacher about me getting bullied. Soon it stopped again but it wasn't over.

For my birthday I got a snackeez and I use it all the time. Today two girls who think they are popular said that snackeez is for losers and people who drink lots of water and are fat.

I only just turned 11 but I  try to help other kids get passed bullying and to keep hope. Now i'm the one who writes letters to peoples teachers to help them to know that someone else cares. I don't just stand by and  watch I tell an adult.

Bullying

Have you ever been called a name? Of course, especially in school. Kids in school can be stubborn. Kids go to school to learn, not to be hurt or scared. Adults are also made fun of in work places. This aggressive behavior even has a name, and it is called bullying.

There are many causes and effects of bullying. The average bullying episode lasts about thirty-seven seconds. It may seem little to you but for the person being bullied, it is a lifetime. People say they intervene 71% of the time, but in reality only 25% of the time someone does. This is one of the reasons the bullying numbers increase. People just walk past without a care. Everyday people skip school, work, going to the park, etc. out of fear in bullying. That is just how some kids live.

Most bullying happens at school, especially in middle school because no one knows quite who they are yet. Everyone has had at least one bullying event, even the slightest little name calling. It starts as young as kindergarten, and if it is not addressed that bullying is wrong at a young age, those children are more likely to be bullies. We do not make a big enough deal of bullying, so there are millions of bullies that we did not teach what is right and what is wrong. This is why it is so important to help people realize that this is wrong.

Bullying has changed quite a bit over time. In 1530, the word “Bully” meant “Sweetheart” but later became “Harasser Of The Weak.” Well, that escalated quickly. Bullies used to just steal your lunch money, but over time the violence increased creating more fearful kids.  Now that the internet is such a big part of our lives, 51% of middle schoolers said they used the internet or social media website to say something mean about another person. So even when a victim goes home, it cannot be escaped. Bullying follows you everywhere. People even go as far as letting someone get hurt physically just to bully someone over the internet!

There are many different types of bullying, but these are the most common.

Physical- when someone uses their body physically to humiliate, injure, or harass someone. For example, look around in gym class. I guarantee someone will be getting made fun of for their own physical form.

Verbal- these are the most commonly used by girls and boys. Almost everyone has seen this more than once. This is when someone uses their words like “ugly.” or “fat.” to bring down someone else about their appearance, or personality traits.

Emotional- this usually includes social exclusion, or more passive aggressive ways to make someone feel bad about themselves or left out. Sometimes people do not even realize they are doing it.

Cyber- cyber bullying is a huge place for bullying. This is when a person uses the internet to bring someones self-esteem down or post embarrassing photos of other people. It could be a person in the same room.

.Most people think that bullying would not affect anyone, “kids will be kids.” You are wrong. Bullying leads to many things that go even into adulthood. It can last a lifetime and leave major scars on a person’s poor heart. This includes depression, anxiety, social impairment, isolation, and in some cases death. This also caused anti-bullying laws in almost all 50 states of America. It is absolutely crazy that even the police have to get involved.  If the school is notified of bullying and does not fix it, they could be breaking the state law. There have been huge movements since bullying became a hot button in the U.S. There are even movies and books about it including “Cyberbully” a fictional story of a girl bullied, and “Bully” a documentary on bullying and how it affects people. Believe it or not, there are even songs about it! From artists like Sia, and Shinedown, Black Veil Brides, even Joel Faviere. Sadly, after all this, most bullies remain stubborn and do not give in to even the police.

Believe it or not, celebrities have been bullied. Lady Gaga was thrown into a trashcan. Even the beautiful Kate Winslet was bullied for being “fat.” Michael Phelps was bullied too for having “big ears.” Everyone goes through it. Even the people that are looked up to. Some even continue to be bullied out of school. Bullying does not just stop there. Adults in the office are bullied by co-workers. The adults are just like the kids. Only 1 in 10 of the workplace victims tell someone about the bullying. Bullying does not stop at just school.

How can we help? There are many ways to help. The first step may seem scary, but please, tell someone. Tell a friend and travel in groups. There are even hotlines you can speak to if you feel you are in danger. Call 800-USA-KIDS (800-872-5437). Just a simple little “please stop” can make a huge difference. Stick up for others, no matter how much society judges them. Sticking up for others is the best thing you can do.

Bullying is bigger than people think. There is no escape, unless we do all that we can. It may be hard to understand right now, but you’ll get it someday. After all the tragedies, people still continue to bully. I hope one day with all our help and strength, the bullying will end. I believe that one day it will be a bully free world.

Highschool Hell

I will never understand what I did to these girls and I'm not sure if I should keep worrying about it. But, it started when two girls in my grade had began to turn every single person I knew against me. My best friend wouldn't be seen within 2 feet of me.. Then the threats started. I got death threats from one girl and threats to have me expelled from the other. It got to the point where I didn't want to go to school anymore; I wanted to stay home 24/7. Because it got to that point, I told my mom and we went to the school. Biggest. Mistake. Ever. The school did nothing about the bullying except make me feel as if it was all my fault! It's summer now; I still have no friends, and I don't want to go back to school to them. School means loneliness & being scared.

my school life was a long long nightmare..until i found a miracle

well my nightmare begin when i was in the 6 grade... i live in Indonesia which almost all the citizens are asian with their fair and smooth skin. i'm a little bit different because i have a skin tone that looks like an caucasian that have a sun burn so there's a lot of dark spot all over my body. the doctor call it hyperpigmentation.. but thankfully it's not dangerous at all, it doesn't hurt physically but it's really hurt mentally. i always thinking that i will never have a friend that accept me just the way i am.

in the 5 and 6 grade my friends called me spotted pig ( i'm fat too),dalmatian, polkadot, ugly, disgusting, virus etc. i can't remember it all it's just to many to tell. i fell so bad..i fell like i'm the ugliest girl on earth. i cry every single night.i pray and ask God. why me?why i'm not born with a perfect skin, beautiful face and slim body that every girl dream of.what did i do wrong?what did my parents do wrong i their life. cause my condition is not only hurting me but also my parents.i really really sad with it.

in the 8 grade i only have 3 friends. the whole class treat me like i'm a virus that if they touch me or my stuff they'll die. they do want to seat next to me, talk to me, and even when someone hold my stuff they will be like "ewwww that's jill's don't touch it.ewww disgusting" and then they threw my stuff to the ground. and it happen every single day.what my 3 friends did? they just say to me "there's nothing wrong with u.just ignore them" . how can i ignore them of it happen every day? and it's almost the same at highschool and even the teacher bullied me.

there's nothing that i can do so i just pray pray and pray. and the miracle happened..i started to make new friends..they never bullied me, even they eat with me at the canteen. even sometimes they talk to other friend that bullied me not to do that anymore. but it wasn't change the situation.but now i realize at least i have few friends that accept me just the way i am and i don't have any friends that bully others.

so...

1. God give me few best friend instead of many bad friends.

2. i will never bully anybody and be a good friend cause i know it's hurt (maybe if you never be bullied you will bully others and be a bad friend)

Freshmen year

So freshmen year and at first everything was good. I started having a crush and I was an athletic trainer which is a person who helps with injuries in sports. So the first semester was good. Then baseball season comes in during the 2nd semester and all of a sudden someone tells me that your a bitch, you talk about all the trainers, your the slut not her, you look like a horse. They had heard from a baseball player that apparently I was talking about all the trainer which wasn't true. Nobody believed me. It got worse though all of us had a meeting to "clear the air" for everyone. The whole meeting was turned on to me however. Everyone in the room was against me. They called me names. I was alone. What was even worse was that their was a teacher in there and they didn't say a word. They let them bully me. I remember going home and crying. Next week is the last week of school and I'm glad I made it. I feel so close to giving up though. It hasn't gotten better. No one will help me. I'm alone.

Online Games Have bullies too

Hello, I'm Jen Foley. I just wanted to share my story about my time om MMORPGS to get the word out.

A lot of time, you picture a bully as a kid pushing another kid at a playground. Well My bullies where grown adults, and this was in video games.

I used to play Final Fantasy 11 and world of warcraft. My experience started as positive. But as soon as the game aged the players became anel over every little thing. All i tried doing was simply play. I tried joining many communities (called linkshells or guilds) and was kick out of them for little to no reason. I've always had social problems and finding it might even be that I have asbergers (sp?)

Here is a more detail about what happen.

First thing was I joined a linkshell, and a guy playing and pretending to be a girl got jealous that i was close friends with the leader. They would start fights with me, play victem, and got me kicked out several times because the leader didn't want the drama.

second experience was some guy who had a live in girlfriend would hit on me. I kept telling him not interested, his g/f got mad and kicked him out of the house, I was to blame and was called a home wreaker. And again kicked out of the linkshell.

i also was cyberstalked as well anytime i would log on, some random guy would ask if i kick a guy in the balls. Ever time i blocked him he would just make a new character. This went on for 3 mnths. I've contacted all personel who handles the game, nothing. I ended up just quiting.

What happen in World of warcraft was worst, I join up and start a character on the roleplay server called Moonguard, what took place was apparently there was alot of open cyber sex (now called sexting) going on. I ran past all of that only to enter the city. When i got there 4-5 players ganged up on me calling me a whore. I never talked to these people as I was new. I went to the forums about it and people just told me to get a thinker skin. I was then temp banned because of asking on the forums.

Playstaytion home on the ps3 was MUCH worst, i tried going on to meet other gamers, what i found was hardly any gamers and nothing but cyber bullies. I was harrassed to no end. People would ask for naked pictures of me, send naked pictures of them. I was called whore, slut, and alot of other names.

Here is the thing I'm 29 years old... most of these people were 18-40 years old.

Why is it in this day and age adult act like bullies to... these are games meant for enjoyment not to be a whore house and bar.

To any parent with a kid playing MMORPG or logging in on Playstation home or even little big planet. Watch them one too many times I've seen adults go after kids online or kids going after adults.

The internet is not anymore safe then it was back in AOL dial up.

Anyway that is my story
